After testing 7 identity theft services, Aura is my #1 pick. The monitoring accuracy, family features, $5M insurance, and 24/7 support are unmatched. It's the only service I recommend without hesitation.
Identity Theft Protection Reviews
Real hands-on testing by Zach from CyberSleuth. Updated April 2026.
After testing 7 identity theft protection services, Aura is the clear #1 pick for families. It wins on monitoring accuracy, insurance coverage, family features, and long-term value.
Identity Guard is the best budget option for simple two-adult households. It uses the same monitoring as Aura but strips out extras. Good starting point โ but if you have kids or want VPN/parental controls, Aura is better value.
Of the 7 services I tested, 5 are better than LifeLock for most families. Aura is my #1 recommendation โ better monitoring, better family features, and a price that doesn't spike at renewal.
IdentityForce surprised me โ it actually beat Aura on dark web alert accuracy in my test. The monitoring is genuinely excellent. The dealbreaker for families is requiring a phone call to sign up for a family plan.
CompleteID is a solid choice for Costco Executive members covering two adults without children. For families or non-members, Aura delivers more for less.
ID Shield is decent but not exceptional. If you're already in the LegalShield ecosystem it makes sense. For everyone else, Aura or IdentityForce offer better monitoring and family features.
LifeLock has a big name and big marketing budget, but in my 3-month test it underperformed on monitoring accuracy, customer service, and family features. The price increase at renewal is a dealbreaker.
